The Jackson St Cottages are the only remaining grouping of freedman cottages in Charleston, SC. As a critical display of the vernacular the city used to see, these buildings qualified for historic preservation tax credits, and are listed on the national register of historic places. Completed in 2018, these cottages now serve Charleston in a mixed use combining a barber shop, make up artist, restaurant, bar, event planner, and event space. When the extensive restoration was complete, they were awarded the most plaques ever given to a single project at the 2019 Carolopolis Awards hosted by the Preservation Society of Charleston. This prestigious award is reserved for only the finest preservation projects where the cottages were quoted “As the new preservation standard for Charleston” by the president of the Preservation Society.
